The language of fans in the 18th Century

You may have seen an 18th Century period drama where a well dressed corseted woman behind her fan, or demurely looked down whilst using her fan across her breast allowing the targeted gentleman an eyeful.  In the 18th Century women were armed with fans as men were armed with swords and they used it to their full advantage.
